It feels so right that my first ever beauty-related review is a skincare review. I’m a huge skincare junkie. I’m obsessed with trying out new products and seeing how they affect my skin. Growing up, I didn’t have the best skin — in fact, it was riddled with pimples and zits to the point others felt compelled to point it out to me (apparently it didn’t occur to them that I own a fucking mirror 🙃) — so I learned early on about cleansers, moisturizers, et cetera.
Back in my first Travel Diaries entry — where I wrote about going the Amsterdam — I very briefly mentioned going to Douglas and spending money on skincare products. One of the things I had purchased is this ‘Detox by Night’ kit by Estée Lauder.
I was really excited to try it out because, especially at the time, I was really looking to step up my skincare game. So when I spotted this, I figured it’d be a good way to try out some more high-end skincare at a fraction of the price (I was wrong though, mostly bc the tax murdered the bill 🙃)
Now let’s break it down. This kit is a nighttime kit, and it includes a moisturizer, a serum, and a foam cleanser. I’m going to review each product separately and then give a final rating for the set as a whole.
Nightwear Plus Moisturizer
This moisturizer goes on thick (is that a grammatically correct sentence? Who cares). It’s definitely a product where a little should go a long way, but it doesn’t. It’s annoying to spread evenly — which really sucks considering the thick consistency — leading to having to use more product than I’d like. I have combination skin: oily t-zone and normal for the rest of my face. So while I don’t mind using a bit extra on my cheeks and such, it really aggravates me having to use more on my forehead.
That being said, it is a pretty hydrating product. After 8 hours of sleep (jk, I sleep maybe 4 hours if I go to bed ‘early’), I don’t wake up with dry or uncomfortably tight skin, both which are good signs to me.
Advanced Night Repair Serum
Alright, first of all, it should be known that this is the first serum I’ve ever used. I have, however, used another serum once I’ve finished this one (I like the other one more). This product comes in a dropper/ pipette format. I’ve seen people drop the product directly onto their face, but I personally felt like I’d use way more than I’d want to. The serum is thicker than I expected it to be. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still definitely a liquid, just not watery.
Another factor — that I personally find important — is the spreadability (no clue of that’s a word but let’s just go with it, ‘kay?). When I use any kind of skincare product, I want to be able to spread it evenly and easily over my face. Otherwise, I have to use too much product just so I can apply an even layer, which also often leads to a thicker layer of product than I’d want.
This serum spreads well, not amazing or anything, but good enough.
Advanced Night Micro Cleansing Foam
These names keep getting more convoluted every time. Anyways — out of everything in this kit — this was the winner for me. I loved this stuff. It’s a nighttime cleanser that feels really soft as your rubbing it into your skin. However, the best feeling is when you wash it off. My face was so fucking smooth immediately once I washed it off. It didn’t even take a couple of weeks or anything, my face felt soft immediately after that first wash.
This was my favorite product in that kit, and I definitely see myself repurchasing this one once I’ve climbed out of the deep dark abyss that is the broke life. :’)
I really enjoyed using this kit. As someone who doesn’t have a lot of money to blow on stuff, it’s a nice way to try out high-end products without absolutely breaking the bank. Plus it’s not too much commitment to the product because they come in sample/ travel size. So it’s perfect for trying out, and if you hate it you can get rid of it/finish using it pretty quickly. That being said, it did take me a solid couple of months to finish the moisturizer and cleanser, the serum — however — was used up a bit too quickly. But that’s okay, found a serum I liked a lot more afterwards.
